Marketing Overwhelm: Why Small Business Owners don’t want to do marketing and how to fix it.

If you’re a small business owner, chances are you’ve had that moment—maybe multiple moments—where marketing feels like an out-of-control circus act. I actually have that moment often! Social media! SEO! Email marketing! Paid ads! Networking! Direct mail! Events! Influencers! The options are endless, and every so-called "guru" out there promises that their method is THE golden ticket to success. It seems like everyday - we are bombarded with images, videos and the next great thing.  An endless supply of “success stories” trying to sell you their fool proof methods.  While information is great - it can be overwhelming.  It can make you feel like you are not doing anything right.  Too  much information - too many options can lead us not to take ANY action.

It’s exhausting.

It’s like standing in the middle of a grocery store with a screaming toddler, desperately trying to figure out which treat will make them happy. But instead of sugar, you’re spending time, energy, and money—often with little to show for it except a headache and a growing sense of marketing-induced dread.

So, how do you know what’s actually worth your time? How do you get the biggest bang for your buck without losing your mind?

Step One: Breathe. Marketing Is Not an Emergency.

First things first—take a deep breath. Marketing is important, but it’s not a life-or-death situation. The truth is, no single marketing tactic will magically transform your business overnight. Anyone who tells you otherwise is probably selling something (and let’s be honest, they probably have a webinar for you to sign up for).

Step Two: Focus on What Matters

Not all marketing strategies are created equal. The best marketing for YOUR business depends on YOUR business.

  • If you’re a local service provider, Google Business and word-of-mouth referrals and content might be your bread and butter.

  • If you sell handmade goods, email marketing and a well-optimized website might be your secret weapon.

The trick is to stop trying to do everything and start doing the right things. But how do you know what the right things are? That’s where an outside perspective can help.

Step Three: Get a Guide (Because Google Can Only Do So Much)

Think of marketing like hiking in an unfamiliar forest. Sure, you could wander around on your own, following random trails and hoping for the best. But wouldn’t it be easier (and far less stressful) to have a guide who’s been there before?

That’s what working with a marketing coach or consultant can do for you. Instead of throwing spaghetti at the wall and hoping something sticks, a coach helps you:

  • Identify the most effective strategies for your specific business

  • Break marketing down into manageable steps

  • Avoid common pitfalls that waste time and money

  • Train you on software and programs to improve your marketing skills.

  • Give you an honest, outside perspective (because sometimes, we’re too close to our own businesses to see clearly)

Step Four: Give Yourself Permission to Ignore the Noise

You don’t have to be on every platform. You don’t have to chase every trend. You don’t have to create five TikToks a day while also sending three emails and hosting a webinar.

Marketing works best when it feels authentic to you and your business. If you dread doing something, chances are you won’t stick with it. Instead, focus on what feels right, what aligns with your strengths, and what actually moves the needle.

Step Five: Take Action (Without the Overwhelm)

Instead of trying to tackle everything at once, start with ONE thing that makes sense for your business. Whether it’s setting up a Google Business profile, crafting a killer email sequence, or finally updating that neglected website—take it one step at a time.

Marketing isn’t about finding a magic bullet; it’s about consistency and strategy. And if you’re feeling stuck, there’s no shame in asking for help. A marketing coach or consultant can help you clear the fog, create a simple plan, and get back to what you do best—running your business without wanting to pull your hair out.

So, take a deep breath, ignore the noise, and remember: marketing doesn’t have to be chaos. Sometimes, all it takes is a fresh perspective (and maybe a good cup of coffee) to make it all feel a little more manageable.
